Dragon Star Varnir Impressions

So I’ve been playing one of Idea Factory International’s newest games called Dragon Star Varnir. I believe I’m half way through the game so I wanted to give my impressions of what I’ve played so far.

Dragon Star Varnir is the latest rpg offering from developer Compile Heart. I say rpg but it’s more of a visual novel. So far I’ve spent the most time viewing cutscenes more than anything else in the game and that’s not a bad thing. Two of this game’s greatest strengths are it’s characters and story. The story revolves around witches who were into cruel circumstances. They are forced to eat dragon meat or risk going mad but after eating enough dragon meat they themselves may become dragons. Our protagonist, Zephy, is a knight whose duty is to hunt down witches. He comes across a dragon during one of his hunts and is gravely injured. Due to the kindness and quick thinking of a witch by the name of Minessa, Zephy’s life is saved but in turn he becomes a witch himself. There is a lot of story to take in as Zephy comes to terms with his new living situation and getting closer to the witches he once hunted. This being a Compile Heart game there has to be a healthy dose of waifu. You have the big sister type, the loli, the tsundere, and an enigmatic character with a mysterious past.

Even though I said the story is where the game is strongest that doesn’t mean the gameplay itself isn’t great. You’re given control of a party explore dungeons and fight turn based battles. All of that is your standard jrpg fair but where this game differs is in that battles take place in the air. There are three planes that combatants can fight on and this can effect whether your attack can reach certain opponents if you use spells or attacks that would normally reach a row or plane of enemies. Most bosses stand all three planes and you need to attack it on each individual plane in order to stop their most devastating attacks. There’s a lot of strategy involved as you add in elemental weaknesses and character transformations. I’ve lost quite a few battles already and that’s just on the normal difficulty.

There are a bunch of other systems at work as well back in the hub town as well. There are side quests you can take on but most just boil to fighting special monsters or fetch quests. You can also take part in the game’s elixir making shop. After making an elixir you can have a particular character drink it and a battle will commence. If you win this battle you the chance to earn special equipment for the character who drank the elixir. Not only that but you can also shower your witch buddies with gifts which leads into increasing your affinity. Doing so leads to events where each girl becomes closer to Zephy. You also have to feed the younger witch sisters to help prevent them from going mad but you also have to be careful how much you feed them because it may lead to them becoming dragons. All of these activities can be ignored but they add to the game so I recommend doing them.

My only negative is the presentation. Most cutscenes are told through static images with no audio to accompany them which is a shame because from the few scenes that are voiced, the cast sounds great. While there are some events told using the in game graphics, the models themselves are minimally animated so they really add nothing to the experience. The character designs are attractive and in battle the models look great. The music is also pretty forgettable, doing a serviceable job filling the silence. My favorite part presentation wise is when the characters transform into they’re dragon forms and unleash their special moves.

So far I’m enjoying what I’m playing of Dragon Star Varnir. There are still so many things I haven’t talked about yet and I’m excited to see where the dating sim elements lead and how Zephy’s journey ends. I’m have another write up for my final recommendation but I can’t see this game doing anything to sour my experience.

My Top 4 E3 Announcements

E3 proves that video games are indeed cool.

It’s been a couple of weeks since E3 ended and I’ve got a few games I keep coming back to and thinking about. I’ve provided amazon links in case you’re interested in preordering any of these games.

1. Final Fantasy VII Remake

So for as long as I can remember I’ve always been a Final Fantasy fan. It started on Super Nintendo with Final Fantasy IV known then as Final Fantasy II. It introduced me to the melodrama and grandiose of JRPGs. I kind of skipped FFVII when it came out because I didn’t have a PS1 until a few years later. I’ve started multiple playthroughs on different ports so while I’m familiar with it but I have no nostalgia for it. Even so, this remake has me extremely excited. The characters look the best they have ever looked, the environments have been embellished to such a beautiful degree, and the combat seems both thrilling and tactical. The combat takes some cues from both Final Fantasy XIII and XV, two games that can be polarizing but I love, and also Secret of Mana. By my accounts that seems like a recipe for a good time.

2. Trials of Mana/ Collection of Mana

Of course being an early fan of Final Fantasy also meant being a fan of the Mana games. Seiken Densetsu 3 was one of the first games I ever emulated. My brother and I spent countless hours playing this game and now we can relive those moments in full 3D. The remake for Secret of Mana was a huge letdown for me because it played exactly like the original except in 3D. For some reason my brain couldn’t accept it but for the remake of Trials of Mana it seems I won’t be having that problem. In a similar vein as FFVII Remake except without the huge budget, Trials of Mana is being remade with modern audience in mind. It still has the item wheel and the same plot, but all of that has been expanded. Another one of my issues with the Secret of Mana remake was the fact that the original game had content cut due to space limitations. One of the only bummers about this game for me is the lack of co-op but that’s fine because Square Enix put the Collection of Mana on the eshop. This collects all the Mana games originally released on Nintendo platforms in the 90s.

3. Eldin Ring

There has been no gameplay footage of this game but I’m excited none the less. From an interview Hidetaka Miyazaki gave with IGN, this game sounds like the next evolution of Dark Souls. More open environments and a backstory created by George R. R. Martin have me excited to explore From Software’s latest entry into the Souls-like genre.

4. Dying Light 2

More people need to be playing Dying Light. More specifically, more people need to play Dying Light with as many friends as possible. This game is probably one of my favorite multiplayer games of all time. It mixes in an open world, parkour gameplay, zombie frights, and a fun combat system. Everything I’ve heard of the sequel has me hopeful that it’ll be even better than the first game. Now your choices will drive the narrative forward; you could never see certain parts of the game map depending on the choices you make. I might have to play a lot of my game single player just so my friends and I can talk about how different our worlds are.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum Review

I may have a new favorite movie of 2019. This third entry in the John Wick franchise is everything you want in a summer blockbuster and then some. The action has been taken to another level. The choreography is a thing most action movies hope to achieve. There is a huge, heaping helping of martial arts, gun-fu and sword play. It’s crazy to think after two already excellent movies that the film makers are still able to come up with some the most brilliant action scenes in cinema.

Honestly, there’s a lot about this film that shouldn’t work. This movie’s tone can shift at the drop of a dime and it should not work. Thankfully, it’s morbid sense of humor is baked in in a way that without it JW3 would fall into typical action movie tedium. I must admit that I find Keanu Reeves to be one of the most awkward actors I’ve ever seen on screen and that’s not a bad thing. His natural awkwardness helps sell the tone shifts for me, personally.

The only place the film falters in is music. It’s just there to exist in the background, rarely ever standing out. There are two stand out pieces: one during a ballet scene and the other a piece from Mozart.

A third John Wick film should not be this good but the beautiful cinematography, brutal action scenes and star studded cast make it a film to remember. If you get a chance you should definitely see this film in theaters if possible. The sound design really sells the impact of every action.

Hi, All!

What’s going on, everyone?! I’ve finally decided after all these years to start trying to do something about this blogging thing I’ve always been hearing about.

I’m going to start with a little bit of an introduction. My name is Cody and I live in a small town in south Louisiana. My passions are gaming, comics, and animation. I love talking about those things and recommending them to people I know. Not too long ago I discovered I had a passion for talking about those things but had no means to do so since not many people around me are interested in talking about those things. That brought me to my wordpress where I can connect with all my nerdy brethren.

My goal is to start reviewing content and sharing my passions with the world. I plan to review video games, anime, and manga. I know in the beginning my posts won’t be that great but it’s my hope that eventually I get good enough to review on a professional level.

Well, that’s it for now on the introduction. My short term plans for the summer include reviewing some recent Idea Factory games and some manga from one of my favorite creators. See ya until next time!
